DRESDEN (19.2.): MASSIVE BLOCKADES OF ANTIFASCISTS PREVENT THAT THE NAZIS CAN MARCH THROUGH THE TOWN
Dear friends and comrades,
I have just come back from Dresden to Prague, there were possibly some 18.000 antifascists of all colours but brown: from the evangelic church through Greens, trade unions up to autonomists.
We were not in one block but formed more groups blocking different streets and ways. The blockade was successful, just it was neither the police nor the city magistrates to give the Nazis the permission but the court of justice. Finally, the magistrates had to allow them to march but they only allowed them to do so in a suburb, not in the centre.
I have seen only a part of the antifa demos and I met some ESF people there: Christine Buchholz, Willi van Ooyen, Tilmann Schwenke (President of Friends of Nature Saxony), Heiko Kosel from the Sorb minority (Member of the Landtag - Saxonian Parliament).
The international participants came from Poland, Sweden, Austria and Czechia as I know. The latter ones came by bus - some 40 people, young and old.

AFRIKANISCHE EINDRUECKE

Vor einigen Jahren wollte ich zum WSF nach Nairobi fahren. Dann war der OEGB-Kongress, die Gewerkschaftslinke hatte einen Auftritt vorbereitet und ich musste alles absagen.
Diesmal schwor ich mir, dass mir Afrika nicht entgeht!
Als "gestandener Marxist" hat man/frau natuerlich einen historischen Raster hinsichtlich des "schwarzen Kontinents" im Hinterkopf: Kolonialismus, Sklaverei, neokoloniale "Unabhaengigkleit"- insbesonders in Senegal.
Aber all das zu sehen, hautnah zu spueren ist ein anderes Ding.
Formal ist das Land seit 1960 unabhangig. An der Oberflaeche glitzert buergerlicher Parlamentarismus (inklusive Senat).
Die Wirklichkeit liegt liegt jedoch woanders.
Die Massenarmut ist mit Haenden greifbar. Dakar hat heute gut 2,5 Millionen Einwohner- durch die Landflucht werden es immer mehr. Gleich an die Uni, in der das WSF stattfand, grenzt eines der zahlreichen Elendsviertel. Aber auch hier treibt die Allianz-Versicherung ihr Unwesen!
Western Union- Bueros gibt es an allen Ecken und Enden: ein Indiz dafuer wie wichtig die Ueberweisungen der im Ausland Arbeitenden zum Ueberleben der Menschen hier sind.
Prekaerer Strassenhandel praegt das Allltagsbild. Die Loehne sind schlicht katastrofal: ein Bauarbeiter ( fuer das neue IBIS-Hotel) erzaehlt mir, dass er pro Tag umgerechnet 3 Euros bekommt. Aber auch in dem guten Hotel in dem ich wohne, ist die Lage nicht besser: ein Ober verdient ohne Trinkgeld gerade mal 2 Euro pro Tag.
Kein Wunder , dass SenegalesInnen daher jede Gelegenheit benutzen, um mit AuslaenderInnen "ins Geschaeft zu kommen". Auch die Voluntairs auf dem WSF setzen alles daran, sich ein wenig dazuzuverdienen.
Die Praesenz des franzoesischen Imperialismus ist ueberall. Oekonomisch sowieso aber nicht weniger militaerisch: franzoesische Gendarmerie und franzoesische Truppen. Im Plateau-Viertel im Zentrum residiert wie einst im Kolonialismus ein franzoesischer General...
Bei all dem Elend und der und der ungebrochenen Praesenz des Imperialismus ist es nur natuerlich, wie positiv die Reaktionen der Menschen hier auf den Abgang der Diktatoren in Tunesien und Aegypten ausfallen.
Einer der bekanntesten Rapper Senegals, der auch auf dem WSF auftrat, hat unmissverstaendlich den Abgang des senegalesischen Praesidenten Wade gefordert.
Lumumba ist nicht tot, ebenso wie Che in Lateinamerika nicht nur ein Symbol auf einem T-Shirt darstellt!
Wenn der schwarzafrikanische Kontinent voll erwacht , koennen sich die Imperialisten aller coleurs und ihre lokalen Schleppentgraeger warm anziehen.

WSF IN DAKAR/SENEGAL: A FIRST -POSITIVE- BALANCESHEET
Though we were confronted with enourmous technical problems I think we can make a cautious positive balancesheet of the WSF in Dakar.
Some ten thousands participated- the opening march was really fascinating. Many African countries were present and there was a real exchange of ideas between North, East and the South.
Many comrades report that the discussions were interesting and often on a high level.
The actual revolutionary process which is going on in Egypt or Tunesia and the protests in many other arabic countries were often in the centre of the debates.
The whole range of economic, social, ecological and political crises of capitalism was on the agenda. There was for example an extreme interesting seminar on the international rise of the far right- with participants from 3 continents! We had an excellent discussion on the limits of "growth"- as it is understood by the ideologists of capitalism.
It was possible to create an agenda of common worldwide actions in the next year.
And I think that Dakar can also be a positive input to overcome the crisis in the ESF process.

KOMMT ZUR EUROPAEISCHEN VERSAMMLUNG IN BUDAPAST 4.- 6. MAERZ !

COME TO BUDAPEST !
Come to the European Assembly in Budapest March 4tyh - March 6 th - organized trough comrades of the ESF in the Kossuth Club.
This assembly will happen in times of open and combined social, economic and ecological crises of global capitalism. The conseqences of this crises for the cee-countries will be in the center of our meeting.
We see the marvellous revolutionary wave in the arabic countries, the huge -defensive- struggles in many European countries and we were participants of the extreme interesting WSF in Dakar/Senegal.
We dont want to hide the fact that the ESF process is today in a state of crisis.
All that we want to discuss open, constructive and in spirit of solidarity.
So come to Budapest with Your ideas and critics. Lets discuss together and decide in which fields we can act together.
In the present situation we think more than ever that another world is possible and necessary and that the ESF can play an important role to bring movements against the crises of capitalism together.

Im Zuge des WSF in Dakar/Senegal komme ich zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben nach Afrika.

WSF IN DAKAR/SENEGAL: " AFRICA-DAY" AND IMPORTANT DISCUSSIONS

After the fascinating march on Sunday with some ten thousands participants and an inspiring speech of Evo Morales we had on Monday the "Africa day".
In a lot of workshops and meetings the enourmous problems of the continent were analysed.
The actual revolutionary process which is going on in Egypt or Tunesia and the protests in many other arabic countries were often in the centre of the debates.
Tuesday the whole range of economic, social, ecological and political crises of capitalism was on the agenda. One of the most interesting seminars was one on the question of " South-South cooperation or North-South cooperation?". After a brilliant introduction of Pedro Paez, a former minister in Ecuador, there was a deepgoing discussion. Mirek Prokes from the Czech Social Forum argued that we should not " forget" the specific problems of the Eastern Europe Countries. Elisabeth Gauthier from Espaces Marx - France said hat the question of the debts is no longer "only" a problem of the south but the public debt is one of the political key questions in the north. Hermann Dworczak from the Austrian Social Forum (ASF) agreed with the analysis of Pedro Paez that there is the enourmous danger of the rise of the far right when the movements and the left cannot give conrete answers on the global crises. But he also stated that the big defensive struggles for example in Greece ( 7 general strikes!) and the present revolutionary process in Northern Africa offer also the possibility of a progressive way out of the crises.
